Podcast episode 413ish: Shauna Johannesen

Timing is everything! Sorry about the lateness of this podcast. Shauna Johannesen returns to talk about stuff that's already happened by the time you hear this. But that's okay. When this aired on the radio, Shauna was just starting a run at Pacific Theatre of her play Common Grace. She wrote it and starred in it. And she was about to embark on a hectic couple of weeks directing her Crazy8s (which she also wrote). Cut-to today: the day after Trying made its debut at the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts. It's all over. It was fantastic. Funny and touching. I saw it and I bought the DVD of all six Crazy8s 2016 films. And not just because I was an extra in two scenes for a total of 1 second screen time. Well, partly, but it would have been great even without my star power.

We've got some catching up to do so let's get to it. In this episode, newlyweds Shauna Johannesen and James Danderfer talk about creating a movie musical in eight days. They were one of six teams that were part of the Crazy8s film making challenge. And their baby, Bed Bugs: A Musical Love Story is a winner. In this episode, we learn about the specific challenges they faced and we hear all four songs from their 15-minute musical. Trust me, you'll be humming them for days after listening to this.

Mar. 2: Shauna Johannesen & James Danderfer

It's Oscar night so we have two filmmakers in studio with us. Last night, Shauna Johannesen and James Danderfer, both former WSF? guests on their own, premiered their 15-minute short film at the Crazy8s Gala at the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts. Over 1000 people roared their approval for Bedbugs: A Musical Love Story. I loved it. So fun and funny and bright.

James Danderfer conceived it, Shauna Johannesen birthed (wrote) it, James composed the music, Shauna starred in it, and they both produced it. (It also co-starred 3-time What's So Funny? guest Toby Hargrave.) You might know Shauna as the "Shut the front door!" reporter on the A&W commercials; James, of course, is a jazz clarinetist extraordinaire with many CDs to his name.

We'll get all the details tonight about the Crazy8s process, what it's like working together as husband and wife, and where they go from here. Maybe we'll see them at the Oscars one day.

Episode 200ish: Shauna Johannesen

Two hundred podcast episodes already? Could it be? It sure could. And is. And that's being conservative because, frankly, after all these years (six and counting) who can count? We've certainly done more shows on the radio side that, for whatever reason, have been lost forever. This isn't one of them.

Actor/playwright Shauna Johannesen visited the studio recently to plug her upcoming Fringe show, Deadley: A Ridiculous Medley of Scenes About Death. Well, that's over with but you can still enjoy the banter and get to know Shauna and all her neuroses and poor spelling. Warning: Things get philosophical.

The summer doldrums are over, people, and we are back at full strength. Well, minus Kevin, who is still in heavy Labour Day celebration mode. But guest-wise, we're starting the fall season off with a bang. (I know, fall doesn't being until the 21st, but we like to get a jump on things around here.)

Tonight, Shauna Johannesen drops by to talk about death and comedy. And acting. And whatever. The writer/actor has penned a new play that premieres at the Fringe Fest September 9 and runs till the 19th at the Firehall Arts Centre (280 Cordova). It's called Deadley: A Ridiculous Medley of Scenes About Death and stars herself along with Gabriel Carter. We'll delve deep into her psyche to find out why a bright young talent would ruminate about such a dark subject.
