May 16: Phil Hanley

The lovely and talented Phil Hanley will be our guest tonight. You've seen him around town for years*, you've seen him on The Tonight Show (if you didn't blink)**, you've seen him on his very own Comedy Now TV special***, you've watched the Hollywood feature film he wrote, Air Buddies****, now everyone's favourite stay-at-home son will make his return engagement on What's So Funny?. Phil has always had a Charles Grodin-like presence on the show so it's a lot of fun for me. No doubt we'll have a good spar.

Hanley lives in New York City now. He just happened to come home briefly to take full advantage of Canada's superior medical system and will be heading back to the Grande Pomme in about a week. So you won't want to miss tonight's episode.

* if you go out to live comedy in Vancouver, B.C.

** it was a taped joke they aired from the Just For Laughs festival. Several comics gave their best joke but Phil's received the only applause break from the studio audience in Burbank

*** I'm guessing here. Just about every comic in Canada has done one

**** but probably not, unless you have a little kid, let's be serious

That was great. One of my favorite episodes in the last while.

I look forward to the podcast, as one previous Phil Hanley episode was one of my favourites. Phil was also excellent in his appearance at Hecklers in Victoria. If he can make it there he should be fine in New York.

Glad you liked it, Anonymous. It was lots of fun. I'll try to get the podcast up soon.

Has 3-4 mins of music before the show starts, and is missing afew seconds off the end.

I think if you go to the show following ours, our last few seconds will be at the start of their program.

I checked out a couple of Marc Maron WTF podcasts, based on your discussion with Phil in this episode. I really only enjoyed his guests, especially the subtle mocking he took from John Dore and not-so-subtle hammering he took from Greg Fitzsimmons on EP 57. He seems like a bit too much of a jerk for my personal tastes. How is he live and solo?

Sounds like you just heard a live episode. You've got to hear a few more. Sure, he's completely self-absorbed, but I wouldn't say he's a jerk. He shows vulnerability. And he's a great conversationalist. Check out the episodes with, oh, Zach Galifianakis, Maria Bamford, Robin Williams, Andy Kindler, Dave Attell... or anyone, really. I much prefer the non-live ones to the live. Each one is better than the previous one, whether you've heard of the guest or not.

Guy, you were right about WTF... the last two with Carlos Mencia were pretty remarkable.
